Hair

The filamentous outgrowth of the epidermis found in mammals. Hair grows on every part of body (except palms and soles), and helps maintain body temperature. Hair grows from follicles that contain the lower shaft and root of the hair. Hair color is determined by the amount of melanin present.

Hair shaft

The term given to the part of the hair that is above the skin.
